Biosafety, first and foremost

The health of people, animals, plants and their environment are closely related. By 2050, the world’s population will have reached 9 billion people, this has implications on our efforts to produce and consume food products while protecting our planet. The “One Health” strategy promoted by the World Health Organization and supported by Bioiberica, focusses on global health from a perspective that emphasizes the interdependence between human, animal and plant health, and their links to the ecosystems in which they coexist.

The growing need for food produced using sustainable farming practices, without reducing crop yields and farmers’ profitability, is a key objective because of increasing environmental pollution and the gradual degradation of cultivated soil.

Biostimulants, as defined by EU Regulation 1009/2019, represent a promising and environmentally friendly tool to increase agricultural production, improving efficiency in using natural resources and reducing fertilizer input in so doing lessening its environmental impact.

There is now ample evidence that hydrolyzed proteins (polypeptides, peptides, amino acids and their mixes) improve crop yield and quality under stress conditions, and they optimize the use of chemically synthesized fertilizers.

Selecting the raw material, as well as the process of obtaining it, are fundamental aspects in developing an effective and safe biostimulant to ensure the quality and functionality of that biostimulant.

Health and safety, production excellence and sustainability are the essence of Bioiberica's way of being and doing, and are the pillars of our success.

Bioiberica is a vertically integrated company, with a clear commitment to the biosafety of all its processes and products, guaranteeing full traceability of all the raw materials of biological origin it uses, and with strict quality control throughout the entire supply chain.

All raw materials used to produce high quality hydrolyzed proteins are certified by the health authorities. Dedicated lines, with facilities and transport vehicles exclusive to the products, and PCR controls, are used to minimize the risk of cross-contamination. In addition, we guarantee the safety of the entire raw material collection process through systematic audits carried out by internationally certified companies.

The other key aspect is the transformation of this selected raw material into a quality product. The production plant, located in Palafolls, is certified to the highest quality standards such as ISO9001, ISO14001, EMAS, ISO5001 and OSHAS 18001. In addition, Bioiberica has developed Enzyneer® biological technology, which makes it possible to obtain L-α-amino acids from proteins, with maximum bioavailability and biosafety.

Enzyneer® complies with the European Commission regulation, which requires that hydrolyzed proteins intended for conventional agriculture must undergo specific treatments to be safe and demonstrate that the average molecular weights of the peptides are not greater than 10 KDa.

In this regard, and according to studies carried out by the Texcell-Pasteur Institute, Enzyneer® guarantees that the result of enzymatic hydrolysis generates protein fragments with an average size of 600 Da, eliminating the risk of the possible presence of viruses or prions.

Enzyneer® produces balanced and consistent batch-to-batch polypeptide mixtures that, unlike chemical hydrolysis, prevent the degradation of free amino acids such as Tryptophan, Histidine and Cysteine, mainly, as well as the release of compounds that are undesirable in agriculture such as chlorides.

In addition, internal studies in collaboration with the University of Alcalá prove that the Enzyneer® extraction process prevents the racemization of the L-α-amino acids to the D- form, ensuring that the biologically active conformation of the amino acids is maintained.

At Bioiberica Plant Health we use these raw materials and processes to develop biostimulants based on L-α-amino acids and other bioactive compounds useful to overcome moments of crop stress, increase crop quality and yield, as well as improve nutrient absorption.

Thanks to our core vertical integration, we can guarantee traceability and quality control throughout the production process, allowing us to have a solid supply chain model.

At Bioiberica we focus on guaranteeing the biosafety of our processes and products to improve the quality and quantity of foodstuffs while maintaining our commitment to environmental care.
