Bioiberica, a Circular Bioeconomy company

Javier Velasco, Bioiberica's R&D Director

The Earth faces unprecedented exploitation of its natural resources, significant and potentially irreversible changes in its climate, and a constant loss of biodiversity that threatens the stability of the living systems on which it depends. This situation is exacerbated by the growth of the world's population, which is expected to reach more than 9 billion in 2050.

The main international organizations are beginning to propose initiatives to face this challenge: the Paris Agreement on climate change, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, are consistent with the lines of action promoted within the framework of the European Union, such as the European Green Deal and the Action Plan towards the Circular Economy presented in March 2020.

The Circular Economy model is therefore proposed as an innovation in the production and consumption system, which aims to maintain and strengthen socio-economic development, including the creation of jobs in a sustainable way, without compromising ecosystem functionalities and preserving at the same time the natural resources, for present and future generations.

On the other hand, the Bioeconomy proposes to pave the way towards a more innovative and competitive society, which uses resources of biological origin more efficiently and in which food security and the sustainable use of renewable resources for industrial purposes are reconciled, ensuring the same time environmental protection.

Bioiberica is a vertically integrated company focused on the extraction of biomolecules of high biological and therapeutic value. Today we have more than 100 products that improve the health of people, animals and plants.

In this sense, the Bioiberica production system works by extracting the immense value of each of the biomolecules present in raw materials of biological origin. To achieve maximum efficiency and the lowest consumption of resources, we use advanced extraction technologies to obtain from active pharmaceutical ingredients (heparin, chondroitin sulfate, etc.) to protein extracts for animal nutrition or for the production of biostimulants for Plant Health.

But, in addition to using raw materials of biological origin, our processes are too. Bioiberica has developed the Enzyneer® biological technology, which allows obtaining L-α-amino acids and bioactive peptides with maximum bioavailability and biosafety, since the result of enzymatic hydrolysis generates protein fragments with an average size of 600 Da, eliminating any possible viral or prion structure.

From these raw materials and processes, Bioiberica products contribute to agricultural production (Plant Health), strengthening the capacity to adapt to climate change in stress situations, progressively improving soil quality, thus ensuring the sustainability of production systems. food.

In the framework of the circular economy, the EU has modified the European fertilizer regulations, which include biostimulants for plants. This new regulation includes a category of products with amino acids, humic acids, plant extracts, algae extracts and beneficial microorganisms (fungi and bacteria) with biostimulant activity in crops and soils. By extension, commercial products that contain mixtures of these substances or microorganisms are also considered a plant biostimulant.

Biostimulants are produced from by-products or agricultural-derived product, in the case of biostimulant microorganisms, using these raw materials as sources of carbon and nitrogen for the growth of bacteria or fungi. These products return to the soil again to enhance plant growth, which is why they can be considered a perfect model of Circular Bioeconomy applied to Agriculture.

Bioiberica's production strategy is therefore 100% Circular Bioeconomy. Starting from raw materials of 100% biological origin and using processes designed to minimize the consumption of water, energy and auxiliary raw materials, we obtain 100% organic, efficient and sustainable final products.

At Bioiberica we are convinced that the principles of sustainability, economic efficiency, social equity and environmental responsibility guarantee the continuity of our business and drive us into the future. Therefore, we want to continue deepening our Circular Bioeconomy strategy with the aim of improving the health and well-being of people, animals and plants and with all this improve the global health of the planet.
